Historical tourists will find Santa Barbara an interesting place to visit, with its many ancient architectural gems interspersed throughout the city. Most of the sites blend so nicely into the landscape that you might not even realize that they're on the National Register of Historic Places!
Victoria Street Mural Progress
The mural that once graced half of Victoria Street is almost fully moved to the Chapala side of the block to make room for new development, as you can see in the photograph above. The site is currently being transformed into a mixed-use space with the ground floor compromising of 18 merchant spaces and a 19,500 sq. ft. market (that is being likened to a smaller version of Seattle’s Pike Place Market and San Francisco’s Ferry Building Marketplace); and 37 condo/apartment units on the second and third storeys.
The city’s Historic Landmark Commission has protected the mural and views of the Arlington Theatre to help preserve the character and history of the area, while also allowing other improvements that will attract more visitors.
We’ll update this as the site develops!
